Drawing begins formal development of skills that are required in any formal art program. We will work towards rendering 2D drawings using basic shapes and stressing the usage of good observational and thinking skills for composition of line, value, shapes and forms. Exploration of mediums such as graphite, charcoal, etc. along with strong applications of use of rulers.

Above is a reference chart for value. Notice that the values have been numbered with 0 being the darkest value and 10 being the lightest value. Occasionally you will see it reversed. I prefer the 0=Black because in today’s digital age 000000 is the hex code for Black. Also low key images are in the lower digits (0-1-2) while high key images are in the higher numbers (7-8-9). This labeling makes sense.
Understanding values is a large component of drawing that leads into other art forms. Sometimes artists slide into a comfort zone on the value scale. It helps to expand your limits and remind yourself of the full range in light and dark that is available to you. If you limit yourself into a small range of the value scale, details and depth might be lost.
