REFERENCES & COPYRIGHTYou have limited permission when working with images online that are copyrighted and are not your own original material. For example, taking photos off of google search and drawing/painting it exactly as you see it.
However, it does not mean that you cannot use them for references. When using images online you may use them to reference as a "study" and they are often not allowed in competitions, for sale or in galleries. You cannot call these artworks, "your originals" because they did not originate with you. You must gain permission from the owner. The answer is always no, if you don't ask...they may say yes! You CAN transform the images however and there are many online resources that provide stock photos. These fall under the "transformative use"...see below and equip yourself with understanding the legal aspects of copyright and using images as an artist.
